The production of hemp in the U.S. state of Kentucky has a history dating to pioneer times, was criminalized in the 20th century, and has recently resumed as a legal industry. Several amazing new businesses featuring Kentucky-grown hemp have already begun to hit the market! 2013 legislation created an industrial hemp research program and a commercial licensing program to allow hemp cultivation for any legal purpose. Industrial hemp in KY is be defined as all parts of the cannabis sativa plant with THC concentration of 1% or less by weight, slightly more forgiving than the national standard of only 0.3%. Growers are required to use certified seeds and may import or resell certified seeds.
